Cognitive assistance systems

A cognitive assistance system is a digital system that supports people with complex tasks by analyzing situations and recommending suitable actions.

The system combines sensor data from the environment with digitally stored knowledge and intelligent algorithms. On this basis, it recognizes the current situation and can determine the optimal solution or suggest the next work step.

Cognitive assistance systems are an important part of the digital transformation and Industry 4.0, as they support human decisions with data-based analysis.

Example of a cognitive assistance system

A well-known example of a cognitive assistance system is a navigation system in a car.

The driver enters a destination and the system automatically calculates the optimum route. In doing so, it continuously processes various pieces of information:

  • GPS data to determine the location
  • Traffic data on the current traffic situation
  • Digital map information

This data is constantly updated during the journey. If the system detects a change, such as a traffic jam, it automatically adjusts the route.

This principle - recording and analyzing sensor data and deriving recommendations for action - forms the basis of all cognitive assistance systems.

Cognitive assistance systems in industry

In industry, cognitive assistance systems support employees, particularly in manual production and assembly. They guide workers step by step through work processes and simultaneously check that they are being carried out correctly.

Modern systems such as Smart Klaus® use various technologies for this purpose:

  • Camera systems
  • Industrial image processing
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Digital process data

The camera images taken at the workplace are analyzed in real time and compared with the process knowledge stored in the system. On this basis, the assistance system automatically recognizes which work step has been carried out or whether an error has occurred.

The system can then, for example

  • display the next work step
  • point out errors or deviations
  • request a correction
